The UnInvited

The first psychological thriller movie of 2009 worth paying multiplex prices for at a student discount, The Uninvited features chillingly supernatural and well made up apparitions, a sharp cast, and a breathtaking plot that reminds you that remakes can be done right. Adapted from the Korean horror film Janghwa Hongryeon, the story centers around a teenager named Anna who is forced to adapt to her new family situation after an accident that changed her life. Attempting to recover from the tragic loss of her mother, she spends time in a psychological facility only to be released back to her party-go-lucky sister and confidante, a grieving yet insensitive father, and his father’s mysterious new girlfriend. When she returns to her astoundingly beautiful waterfront residence, she feels something terribly wrong within the house. Convinced that her father’s new girlfriend, Rachel, is the troubling presence, she desperately tries to put together the events that happened the night of the accident and uncover just who Rachel is. As the plot unfolds, the musical score peaks, and the ghosts reveal themselves, you’ll find yourself curling up in your date’s jacket to hide from the suspense.

I purposely didn’t do much homework before I saw the Star Wars: Clone Wars movie for a few reasons: First, I am—to completely underestimate the truth of the matter—familiar with characters in the Prequel era and their back stories. I feared that I would stumble across spoilers if I read too much into it. Second, I did not want to see the movie carrying any expectations; after all, an animated version of Star Wars cannot even hold a candle to the epic live action saga. I cannot say that I was skeptical about an animated Star Wars—as many of you may be. I need no reasoning when it comes to my deeply rooted bias. My exclamation that, “It’s STAR WARS” is reasoning in itself.

What happened with The Happening…?!

M. Night Shymalan has a microcosm structure to his movies where the phenomena occurring in the movie has a direct parallel to the events in the lives of the characters. When the characters reach a resolution, everything else falls into place. From a broad perspective, the movie then serves to illustrate a fundamental principle in a way that sets it apart from the ordinary, traditional stories we learn such virtues from. M. Night Shymalan does not deviate from this structure, so loyal M. Night Shymalan fans will not be disappointed, but they will not be surprised either.

It always rains on moving day

I am not a fan of the television show, but when my girlfriends outvoted me two to one on seeing the midnight showing, I just had to check out what the craze was all about. Often I caught the promos for the series on cable TV (even more frequently when the show was syndicated), flipped through the promo ads in women’s magazines, heard my girlfriends rant and rave about it, and even took the “Which Sex and the City Character Are You?” quiz on the Internet. Still, the series still did not strike an interest with me. After all I am a young, geeky mother, journalist, and college student. What can I relate to in the sex lives of older women? Sure, my friends and I go out for lunch, have a drink, and discuss our adventurous, dramatic, and all-too-often comedic sex lives and firmly believe—like most girlfriends post-Sex-and-the-City-Era—that we deserve a television series about our lives. I remained a skeptic about the success of the series and, therefore, the movie, certainly wondering how it could generate such a cult following of women between the ages of 21-60.
